However, following a reboot, it fails to download on first attempt, but always works on second and all subsequent attempts. At least this is on our three systems. IMO still the best em client - only negatives are that it does not auto spell-check and cannot handle some fonts.

Otherwise excellent. Imports every thing including settings and will have you up and running in minutes flat. The eM Client performance is 10 times that of Microsoft Outlook I wouldn't vote for it as the best free email client for the same reason as the reviewer says: "eM Client is certainly one of the better looking clients available for Windows however, the free version is held back by the account restriction to only two email addresses.

This is the one massive limitation with the free version. Being limited to two email accounts excludes many email users on Windows. Today it is typical for Windows users to have at least three email accounts. On top of that there could be accounts for volunteering with, or administering of, sports clubs, websites like this one, schools, etc. For what it's worth - recently spent a day moving my partner's emails from Mac to new PC - chose Thunderbird, running on W10, as we have about 10 POP accounts.

Made sure all mailboxes were empty at servers pre transfer. All fine initially but after a couple of days - practically impossible to get mails. Quick search online shows that recent updates to TB seem to have messed up POP3 access big time and have left many frustrated and annoyed users? Fortunately we are still running in parallel on the Mac so not lost anything and had set TB to "Leave messages on server" before unleashing it! Not sure whether to try Opera or accept the inevitable and go to Gmail as we need to be able to get and respond to mail under the original accounts.

Great point about the increase of mobiles as a place for checking email. I'm one of those dinosaurs that prefers a mail client on a computer. I use gmail and have tried to love Google's online interface, but I just can't. Labelling emails and then selecting them to archive them seems so much less efficient than dragging them to a folder in a client.

For a non-commercial open-source project, SeaMonkey users get an enormously comprehensive Outlook alternative that goes far beyond the actual function of an email client.

SeaMonkey is basically many different Mozilla projects bundled together. The electronic organizer Evolution is an email and groupware program that has proved very popular among Linux users as a free Outlook alternative.

It supports all the important functions that Outlook offers: In addition to the administration of email traffic, contacts, appointments, tasks and notes can also be organized. Most of the screen is devoted to your inbox, with a minimum of toolbar and other clutter. Messages are neatly organized via conversations for easier viewing, and you can read and reply to emails with ease, even as a first-time user.

There's plenty of power here. Dynamic mail makes Gmail more interactive, with the ability to take action directly from within the email, like filling out a questionnaire or responding to a Google Docs comment.

Messages can be automatically filtered into tabbed categories like Primary, Social and Promotions, helping you to focus on the content you need. You can also access Gmail offline, although you'll need Google Chrome for that to work.

Furthermore, there is a neat snooze feature that allows you to, well, snooze an email for a specified amount of time it also automatically labels that email as important. Other features are more questionable. Instead of organizing messages into folders, for instance — a simple metaphor which just about every user understands — you must filter them using a custom labelling system. This works, and has some advantages, but isn't popular with all users.

Still, Gmail is an excellent service overall, and a good first choice for your email provider. Google makes a paid business-oriented version of Gmail available in the shape of its G Suite product. Then you have to sift through hundreds of postings to find what - usually nothing! Mozilla doesn't want to hear from you about your little problems. Constant problem - you can find a particular email, and it will tell you what folder it's in - but good luck finding that folder if you have extensive folders and subfolders.

There is no help at all. No way to figure out where you stashed that folder. I've spent hours searching for a single folder. Last problem - If you go to File Explorer to see where your data is stored - good luck. T-bird's scheme for storing its data in mixed up msf and sbd files is from some other planet. Some T-bird folder names have corresponding files but others don't and their contents have some of the saved emails but not others. It's all a complete mystery.

If you want to save a good folder for later possible use, you have no idea of what to save, or how to restore anything by pasting it back again. I tried Operamail which I found to be a very good email and contacts client, but no calendar, etc. Then I tried Thunderbird was too "clunky" and slow for me.

I liked Seamonkey more and I've been using for the last four years. It has email, a calendar, tasks, events, contacts, a browser and more; most of which need add-ons to make them more usable to each users needs.

I recommend users install exts's in small batches for troubleshooting any incompatibility issues that may arise. I would strongly urge you to not use MailBird. They "phone home" all your emails and have even publicly stated that it is not illegal to do so and are continuing.

In their newer versions they added an "opt out" feature but it still phones home. You can use any packet sniffer to see for yourself. I downloaded it and removed it straight away because it is NOT free. Only the trial period is.

First, its funny that you suggest the non-free Postbox as one of the two 'main' options, then make false claims see below about Thunderbird, apparently unaware that Postbox is a Thunderbird derivative, and is currently based on a very OLD version of Thunderbird.

What false claims? Well, Thunderbird development is far from dead. It has received more new features and bug fixes since Mozilla pulled its developers off of the main project Mozilla still provides considerable infrastructure support than it did in the previous 5 years under Mozilla's umbrella. So, the user base is definitely supportive of Thunderbird, and as far as I'm concerned, the future's so bright, you have to wear shades.

Thanks Charles!
